VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN) technology uses MAC-in-UDP encapsulation to extend Layer 2 networks over Layer 3 networks.
It encapsulates the original Ethernet frame into a UDP packet, allowing it to traverse an IP network.
VXLAN decouples the logical network from the underlying physical network, meaning MAC addresses of VMs are encapsulated and do not affect the routing of packets across the IP underlay.
VXLAN supports large-scale network expansion with up to 16 million VXLAN segments (compared to 4096 VLANs).
Furthermore, because VXLAN uses a routed underlay network, VM migration is not restricted by Layer 2 boundaries.
