Autonomy, while important, is not the primary concern when evaluating the clinical justification for an emotional support animal. Structural family therapy, originated by Salvador Minuchin, is a model that places emphasis on how, when, and to whom family members relate in order to understand and then change the family's structure.
Family systems therapy, originated by Murray Bowen, is used to increase the family's awareness of each member's function within the family and to increase levels of self-differentiation.

Specific phobia patients fear specific objects or situations, such as animals, storms, heights, blood, airplanes, or any situation that may lead to vomiting, choking, or developing an illness.
Panic disorder patients experience brief episodes of intense dread accompanied by physical symptoms like chest pain, chills, shortness of breath, and an irregular heartbeat. Agoraphobia patients fear situations or places where they might have trouble obtaining help if they become scared. Avoidant personality disorder patients are timid, easily wounded by criticism, and hesitate to form interpersonal relationships.

Humanistic therapy is based on the belief that people have an innate drive to reach their full potential, and psychological symptoms and distress are often the results of obstacles that prevent the individual from doing so. Humanistic therapy focuses on empowering the patient to develop their full potential and self-actualize by creating a supportive, non-judgmental environment in which the patient can explore their thoughts and feelings and work toward their goals.
