The ASET Code of Ethics unequivocally requires members to act with integrity towards clients and employers and to actively avoid conflicts of interest. A conflict of interest exists when a professional has a personal or financial interest that could inappropriately influence their objective professional judgment. Receiving a "secret commission" or "kickback" from a supplier while advising a client to purchase from that supplier is a textbook and severe conflict of interest. The client trusts the engineering technologist to provide unbiased, optimal technical advice based solely on the client's needs and project specifications. By accepting a secret commission, the consultant is financially incentivized to recommend a product that benefits their own wallet, rather than what might be best or most cost- effective for the client. This deeply violates the professional trust placed in the technologist. To resolve such an issue ethically, any existing financial relationships must be fully disclosed to the client upfront, before any recommendations are made.

The corporate and regulatory structure of ASET is governed by the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act (EGPA). The ASET Council functions as the ultimate governing body or "board of directors" for the association. As part of its statutory duty to manage the affairs of the profession and ensure the protection of the public, the ASET Council is granted the legal authority and responsibility to strike and populate the various statutory committees required by the Act. This includes formally appointing the qualified professional members and overseeing the government-appointed public members who sit on the Investigative Committee, the Practice Review Board, and the Discipline Committee. The Discipline Committee does not appoint itself (Option D), nor is it appointed by the Appeal Board (Option B). The Council ensures that the Discipline Committee is composed of experienced, impartial professionals capable of conducting fair, quasi-judicial hearings regarding member misconduct.

In tort law, a professional can be held liable for "negligence" if they owed a duty of care, breached that duty by failing to meet the standard of a reasonable professional, and caused damage as a direct result.
A classic example of professional negligence is a "poor building design" (such as a structural flaw or failure to meet code). Crucially, the liability for this negligence does not disappear the moment the building is completed. Under the concept of latent defects and depending on provincial ultimate limitation periods (often 10 to 15 years), a professional can be held civilly liable if their poor design causes injury or catastrophic failure many years after the construction was finished. Options C and D involve situations where the defendant likely fulfilled their duty of care (by issuing a warning) or where the event was a pure accident lacking negligent intent. Therefore, the ongoing liability for a dangerous design flaw is the clearest example of tort liability.

Philosophy is traditionally divided into several main branches. Metaphysics is the study of existence and very basic ideas (Option B). Epistemology is the study of knowledge itself, how we acquire it, and its limits (Option C). Logic is the study of the rules of valid reasoning and argumentation (Option D).
Ethics (also known as moral philosophy) is specifically defined as the study of right and wrong, good and evil, and the moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity. In the context of professional practice, studying ethics involves understanding how to systematically evaluate complex situations, balance competing duties (e.g., duty to employer vs. duty to the public), and determine the most morally defensible course of action. It provides the intellectual framework necessary for professionals to navigate the grey areas of technology, business, and law while maintaining their integrity.

When a regulated member has access to proprietary data, trade secrets, or personal customer information, they are ethically and legally bound to protect that information. Sharing sensitive customer data with a third-party client without explicit authorization and legal justification is a severe breach of confidentiality and violates privacy laws such as the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) or provincial equivalents. Anonymizing the data or signing a confidentiality agreement with the requesting client does not override the fundamental breach of trust and unauthorized access to the employer's proprietary data. The member must firmly decline the client's request to access this restricted information. If the client persists, the member should escalate the issue to their management or corporate legal department. Upholding confidentiality is not just an ethical duty but a strict legal necessity to protect the public, the customers, and the employer from harm and liability.
