Tardive dyskinesia is a serious adverse effect associated with the use of antipsychotic medications. This type of movement disorder can result from long-term use of these medications and is characterized by involuntary movements of the mouth, face, and tongue. PMHNPs must be vigilant for this adverse effect and monitor for its development in clients taking antipsychotics.

In 1965, Dr. Loretta Ford (a public health nurse) and Dr. Henry Silver (a pediatrician) established the first nurse practitioner program at the University of Colorado. Intellectual disability (ID) is a disorder characterized by significant limitations in cognitive functioning and adaptive behaviors, including communication and independent living skills. The criteria for ID include an IQ score below 70, which is present in this patient's case. Autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia do not necessarily affect IQ. Pervasive developmental disorder is a subtype of autism spectrum disorder.

Agranulocytosis is a potentially serious risk when prescribing patients mood stabilizers such as carbamazepine and antipsychotics such as clozapine. The patient should be assessed for this condition if presenting with an elevated temperature.
Increased metabolic rate, dehydration, and infection can all be related to an elevated temperature, however, agranulocytosis would be the most pertinent and most serious condition to consider.
