In the context of mental illness, the Recovery Model of Care pertains to a person gaining and retaining hope; understanding their abilities and disabilities; engaging in an active life; and having personal autonomy, social identity, meaning and purpose in life, and a positive sense of self.
The four dimensions of recovery are health, home, purpose, and community.

Functional imaging measures the functioning of areas of the brain and bases the resulting assessment on blood flow. In functional imaging, radioactive pharmaceuticals are used to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Family systems therapy was developed by Murray Bowen, who believed that an individual's problematic behavior may serve a function or purpose for the family. This therapy focuses on chronic anxiety within families. Treatment goals of family systems therapy include increasing self-differentiation, which helps family members learn that their self-worth is not dependent on external relationships, circumstances, or occurrences.
Changing family structure is a goal of structural family therapy. Developing nurturing communication is a goal of experiential therapy. Helping family members behave in ways that will not perpetuate the problem behavior is a goal of strategic therapy.

Patients with schizoid personality disorder care little for social relationships, have a restricted emotional range, and appear indifferent to criticism or praise.
Patients with borderline personality disorder exhibit impulsivity, self-harm, inappropriate anger, and affective instability. They feel empty and bored, and they frantically try to avoid abandonment.
Patients with avoidant personality disorder are timid and easily wounded by criticism from others. They fear embarrassment and hesitate to form interpersonal relationships.
Patients with antisocial personality disorder exhibit criminal behavior beginning in childhood, such as truancy, fighting, destructiveness, and theft. They often default on debts, behave irresponsibly, and act recklessly. They show no remorse for their behavior.

The CAGE screening test is a tool used to identify potential alcohol use disorders in patients. It consists of four questions.
1. Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
3. Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (eye-opener)?
