Symptoms of PTSD cannot precede the traumatic event associated with the diagnosis. Although poor nutritional status and low educational levels may impact overall coping, they do not indicate the potential for PTSD.

Prenatal influences on the development of schizophrenia include poor nutrition and exposure to viruses. Having a family history of schizophrenia increases the risk of developing or triggering schizophrenia. Taking psychoactive or psychotropic drugs as a teen and/or young adult is also a risk factor.
